My pitbull is phenobarbital and fish oil, liver enzymes are high?
My pitbull Chico is 4 years old and was diagnosed epilepsy for about a year. He started on Diazapem necessary, but had 2 more grand mal seizures since and was put on phenobarbital. He just had his liver enzymes checked and AST 140U / L and should range between 0-50. Its levels are ALKP 309U / L and should be between 23-212. The vet suggested fish oil to reduce the number and told us to come back in three months. However, since it is on oil Fish (3-4 days) had stool is runny, REAL bad gas, and acts whiny and anxious. And the worst part is that my son choked to friends and had to be taken to the emergency room with a small cut, but this is the FIRST time and I wonder if this is an effect of fish oil or is he not feeling well because of his liver function? Please help! I suppose I should mention that he had a rawhide, when he choked kid. And I since he was 8 weeks and he was very loved. California Food Eats Natural
If his liver function is compromised that it is probably not feeling well. Fish oil does not cause behavioral changes, but the pain caused by liver problems could. Gas and diarrhea, fish oil. Any sudden change in diet, including adding Supplements like fish oil may cause stomach upset. I am a little surprised that your vet recommends fish oil function liver. It helps, but there are other more supplements effective liver function. Ask your veterinarian about sylimarine (Thistle) is readily available under the trademark or denosyl denarmarin. When my cat's liver has plunged after an anesthetic procedure my vet put it on denosyl for a month and he brought his liver values return of three times the normal return to normal limits. After that we were able to end the denosyl, although some animals must be on it long term.
